Another fun time of baseball season

Since my interests in baseball skew toward the business side of things rather than the scouting or pure baseball ability side, I find this to be a very exciting time.  We’re getting down to the wire of Spring Training and teams are whittling down their rosters.   This means that a host of out of options players are on the bubble with their current teams and could force some trades/releases very soon.  Today we saw the Yankees trade Sergio Mitre to the Brewers in part because he is out of options.  New York was able to move a player who offers little roster flexibility for another (Chris Dickerson) who still has an option remaining.  This may have little impact on either New York’s or Milwaukee’s overall season, but it’s still interesting to me.

Before Opening Day there are likely to be several more moves like this that should only really amount to minor roster tweaks.  But, to me, these are exciting times that test GMs and their ability to build a competitive roster from players 1 through 40.
